Grants support 18 local projects in the borough

Grants totaling more than £15k are being awarded to 18 local projects in Telford and Wrekin that improve the environment or community.

Since its launch in 2014, the ‘EnviroGrant’ scheme from Telford & Wrekin Council’s recycling and waste partner Veolia has awarded more than £93,000 to more than 100 community groups.

Projects in the latest funding round include beehives, defibrillators, outdoor activities, orchards, a mural, litter picking equipment, raised beds, PPE and habitats for wildlife.

Councillor Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: “These grants are offered as part of the added value element of our contract with Veolia and they make a big difference to local groups who are committed to improving our communities.

“It is wonderful to see so many different projects benefiting, and I am particularly delighted to see that the Friends of Dawley Hamlets Local Nature Reserve has secured funding to stage a range of family-friendly events, as nature will continue to be an important outlet for us all.

“A number of schools have also benefited from funding, including Aqueduct Primary School, Ladygrove Primary School and Meadows Primary School and Nursery. Two of them will be using the money for outdoor and wildlife learning, which will be great for the children.”

Steve Mitchell, Regional Director for Veolia said: “It’s always a pleasure and a privilege to hear from so many passionate and inspiring people who are working in their local community to enhance our surroundings.  This year we have had such a variety of applications from the borough that we are thrilled to be able to offer financial support too at a time when they are needed more than ever."

All successful applicants are being invited to a virtual celebration event on 11 March where they will hear more about the projects being funded and meet representatives from the council and Veolia.
